New Year's Eve - at home

I got home around lunch time. Just in time to shower & run to Chipotle with Michelle. We laid in the bed & rented "Jennifer's Body." It didn't suck, but it wasn't good.
We had dinner with her parents at a Chinese restaurant in Mountain Park - a family tradition of theirs. We spent the rest of the night in the bed watching TV & catching up on some needed rest. Dick Clark looked really good but sounded really bad. It makes me more sad than happy that he's still on TV. Happy New Year...

St. Charles, MO

Tonight was wonderful. It was very fitting for the last show of the tour. We started off this tour 3 months ago, struggling to fill 5,000 seats. SInce then, we've been on Conan, the CMA's, & the AMA's. "Toes" has gone #1. We've been nominated for 3 Grammys. All of that stuff has helped immensely. Tonight we played to 6,500+ folks in the St. Louis area on New Year's Eve Eve; a hard sell for an entertainment nighttime activity.
It was a normal show. We've got our show down pat - just in time for the end of the tour. We signed autographs for 2 hours tonight. It sure does feel good to be wanted.
We're going home tonight for a quick day of R & R - then back out to Oklahoma for a ZBB quickie: 2 hour ZBB show. Just ZBB.

Indianapolis, IN

So, Indy. I love Indy. However, all I saw of Indy was the inside of the Pepsi Coliseum. Did you know that this was the original venue for the Pacers ABA team? Also, The Beatles performed here in 1964. That's pretty cool, huh?
Anyway, our show tonight was fantastic. Maybe the best I've ever played. Good, big crowd. I wore my new suit again tonight.
We had an "end of tour" party tonight. Rusty cooked, most drank, & Jeffrey made a photo compilation that we watched a projector screen. The slide show was all snap shots of the tour. It was a ball. Not much else to report. See you in St. Charles, MO.

Nashville, TN (day two)

Today was pretty awesome. I woke up in my favorite hotel (The Hermitage). I slept in. I had breakfast in bed. I got to go to Gruhn's. I did something great for some one else. I got to play a show. I had fun. I spent all of my spare time with my wife.
All in all - a GREAT day.
We played the Ryman again tonight. No sound check. We got to leave our stuff up.
I traded my old GIbson mandolin for a fiddle. I gave the fiddle to my friend Levi. His fiddle got crushed some months back. He deserves that fiddle more than I deserve a second mandolin. I hope he enjoys it.
Off to Indianapolis later tonight.

Nashville, TN

I have benefited from 2 straight nights of fantastic sleep. This morning was a breeze. Michelle & I made our way easily to Nashville (with a brief stop at the Cracker Barrel @ Lookout Mountain). We checked in to our hotel then walked to soundcheck at The Ryman. It was a normal Southern Ground day of events. Soundcheck, eat & greet, & warmup were standard form.
The show was stellar. Minus some of the cobwebs, I could tell that everyone really appreciated the time off but was excstatic about playing again. Mac MacAnally, Joey & Rory, & Oliver Wood joined us on stage tonight. What a great night of music.
I debuted my "Katy K" nudie suit tonight. It was one of my XMAS presents from Michelle.
All is well in Zacville.

The Day After Christmas & Before Work

Most folks have the entire weekend off. That's most people. I, however, have to get back to work tomorrow.
Upon waking, I found that Michelle had completely rid our house of Christmas. The only thing I had to do was move the tree from the living room to the porch. Sweet!
I then cleaned out my closet (literally) & my chester drawers. I filled 3 trash with clothes. I dropped them in the clothes collection box in Snellville. I went to see 'Avatar' in 3-D with my stepfather & brother this afternoon. I really enjoyed the 2-D version... but that movie was fantastic in 3-D. Much better. It convinced me that the 3-D format can be formidable.
After returning to Atlanta, I packed my clothes & tried on some stuff. Ready for the next run.

Merry Christmas 2009!

Well, well, well. Michelle got me a embroidered suit. All I have to say is that it kicks ass! Some of our family had to kick in for it. I really, really love it. Enough about me... today was great. I got to see a lot of my family. We got used to having my Dad in town on Christmas. That wasn't the case this year. We really missed him.
We went to see Sherlock Holmes. Great movie. All in all, it was a fantastic Christmas. What a great time off too. I shall return to work refreshed.

Christmas Eve 2009

I got to sleep in today. It was nice... after the hectic day yesterday. Michelle & I went to The Varsity at noon to grab a couple boxes of fried pies for tonight's dinner party.
We left for Snellville around 2pm. After we got there, I helped bring in the presents & set up the kiddie table. Shortly after that, I was curled up in a chair reading my book with Charlie in my lap.
Dinner & folks came & went. I ate WAY too much. Oh well. Santa comes tonight. Hopefully you've been good.

Beat...

Happy Christmas Adam! My brother called & woke me up at 4:17am. His plane was a little early. I picked him up at the airport & we both came back to the house for a nap. We got up at 7:30am to shower, pack the car, & head to Snellville. MIchelle dropped us off at my Mom's house & we made our was to Spartanburg, SC to meet with her family. 3+ hour drive (both ways) & 5 sites throughout the town equaled 12 hours of travel & visiting. Michelle & I came home & I am about to crash. Good day.

Another Day Closer

I finished all of my Christmas shopping today. What a relief! I wrapped all of those presents today as well. Michelle & I had lunch together & I worked on some guitars & tuned my Autoharp today. Autoharps are interesting instruments. It's been about 3 years since it's been tuned. So you have to tune it... come back, tune it... come back, tune it, etc.
This afternoon we made a cake for Michelle's Mom's Christmas Eve party. It's fun to cook together sometimes. Not much else to report. We made a quick run to pick up a couple things at the studio. Michelle had a beer to wind down tonight. I need to pick my brother from the airport at 5am tomorrow morning. I need to get to bed early... I hope. I seem to have a problem with insomnia sometimes.

Avatar

Today started accompanying my wife on a dog walk. Then, we started watching "A Christmas Carol" on OnDemand... the 1938 version. About 30 minutes into it, our doorbell rang & it was John Hopkins. He brought us a tree ornament for a Christmas present. Since our concentration was broken on the movie, Michelle & I made our way to Jimmy John's for lunch, Michael's for yarn, & Maple Street Guitars for classical guitar strings. It was A.D.D. errand running.
When we came home, we finished the movie. Then we decided to go see "Avatar" at the movies. It truly was a great movie... despite all the bells & whistles. The characters, the story, & the visuals were great... but it was the imagination behind all of it that astounded me - coming from an artist's mind being recognized by another artist. WOW! I don't care who you are - you have to see that damn movie.
PS. CD's are now available at CD Baby again. Click on the "Albums" button on my website.

Decatur, GA

Today started at a snail's pace... just like I like my Sundays. Michelle & I had brunch at a new neighborhood restaurant with some friends. Then a quick visit to the grocery store. Then, all of a sudden, it was VEG TIME!
I crashed in front of the TV for the 1pm & 4pm NFL games. In my case it was Falcons-Jets & Bengals-Chargers. I always root for the Falcons, even when they suck. This year is different. Very much like the Georgia Bulldogs last year. Most expected much more this year for Atlanta. They happen to be floating around the middle of the pack this year & have been mathematically eliminated from the playoffs already. Oh well - they won. That's all anyone can ask of this week.
The Bengals ha a rough one today, losing by 3 on the road. Most of the hardcore NFL fans fell in love with this group of guys when they starred in HBO's Training Camp series this summer. I'm very happy for them to have such a turnaround this year from all of the bad seasons in Cincinnati.
Michelle & I went to Eddie's Attic tonight. Ed Roland (of Collective Soul fame) was having a charity benefit. I got up there & played 4 Christmas tunes. I had a lot of fun. It happened so fast & it was all improv so my memory is sketchy on the details, but here goes:
Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas ("Christmas Time Is Here" instrumental intro)
I'll Be Home For Christmas
Happy XMAS (War is Over) with Eddie Owen
Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer

There it is. Sleepy town is a-callin' my name.

Christmas Parties

I totally paced myself to leave the house around 12:15pm. We headed to Michelle's Dad's place. It was a good visit with that side of the family. I pigged out on casseroles & such. Can't make a habit of that.
We headed back home around 6pm. Let the boys out & then headed to another party on the complete other side of town. I like parties okay... but I love Christmas. This is by far my favorite time of the year. Followed by the turning of the leaves at fall & the warming of spring. Everything else is just okay. Bring it on, Santa!

Yacht It Up!

Okay... here's the abridged, short, abridged version. I got up & called my luthier (guitar repairman), Donald Dunlavey, this morning. He said that he's be ready for me by 1pm. Cool! So I didn't have to leave the house until noon-15. 10 minutes later, Zac calls & asks if I can make a run to his house & grab some guitars to take to Donald's. Okay. Sure. It's completely the other direction, but I'll live.
So I left the house around 10:15am for Zac's. The weather was about as bad as I could imagine (without ice). It was rockin' in the 40's with heavy, heavy rain. Not only that but it was the Friday before Christmas... so there was some additional traffic.
I got to Zac's just fine, loaded his guitars, & made my way out to Jonesboro. Half way into my trip, I couldn't see very well. My car was fogging up & I was exhausting my settings on my A/C-Heater. So I decided to pull into a parking lot & wipe my windows down. The problem occurred when I attempted to put it in reverse & nothing happened. Long story short, my transmission is toast. I got the car home. No need to have it fixed because the repair would cost more than the value of the car.
I swapped all of Zac's guitars into MIchelle's car & drove to Jonesboro. Or... tried to drive to Jonesboro. Due to a wreck, I sat in traffic for an hour on I-675.
I finally reached Donald's, swapped out Zac's unrepaired for repaired guitars (& grabbed my Martin). Then back to Zac's. Then to Variety Playhouse for a short, one song rehearsal. Tonight I played "Jingle Bell Rock" with Yacht Rock at their sold out Variety PLayhouse Christmas show. Nothing else to report other than they're really good. Need rest.

Day off

Michelle & I ran errands, ate lunch, & saw a movie. We saw "Brothers" actually. It was über-intense. I suggest it but don't do any heavy lifting afterwards. It was quite fatiguing.
Not much else to report after that. It was a nice, relaxing day.

9 More Sleeps 'Til Christmas

I got a monumental amount of sleep last night. I'd say that I'm officially caught up. I spent the morning with Michelle & the boys. After lunch I took to the studio. I played Hammond organ & electric guitar on a few tracks for Brandon Perry. It was a breeze... especially working with John Hopkins engineering & producing. I tinkered with some guitars in the basement after coming home. Michelle & I had dinner with our friend Autumn at California Pizza Kitchen. After we got home we put in the Muppets' Christmas Carol on DVD. It's now a holiday tradition to watch it. All is well in Clayville.

A Multitude of Events

Since I fell asleep so early last night, I was up at 5:30am. So I was out of the house by 8:30am. That's über-early for someone who usually wakes after 10am. I went to the studio. I did a little hard drive maintenance while I waited for some delivery guys to pick up some risers that are in the big room. They never showed. I left town around 10:30am for Snellville.
I had an audiologist appointment today to check my hearing. I do it every year. I passed with flying colors. My hearing is actually better now than a year ago - attributed to playing at lower volumes with ZBB than MTB.
Anyway,
I picked Michelle's Mom up for lunch & a little shopping for Michelle's Christmas presents. I then dropped her off & went to Sound Associates in Lawrenceville. I traded a guitar for a 1965 Gretsch Country Club G6192. It needs a neck reset & a refret but, for what I had in the other guitar, it was still a good deal.
I came home for a couple of hours of rest. Michelle made dinner, we walked the boys, & then we went to the movies to see "Invictus." It was fantastic. Clint Eastwood has turned out to be one of America's greatest directors. Hands down!

Thrown Together

Late bloomer. I know. I was up late last night because I discovered Hulu for the first time. I've been aware of it for a year but never really had the time to investigate it. I must have watched 5 episodes of He-Man. I haven't seen that stuff for 25 years. THey had the first full season online to watch for free. I also saw that they had Thundercats too.
Anyway, I was up late. I had plans to sleep in to, say, 10am. Michelle had jury duty so she wasn't there to answer when Georgia Power came a-knockin' at 7:45am. They wanted to inform me that they were going to change my meter to a model that can be read by satellite. I guess that's how they're getting rid of meter readers. It makes fiscal sense I guess.
Continuing, I was up. No going back to sleep for me. I decided to embrace the day. I can't divulge the details of my entire morning because most of it was shopping for Michelle's Christmas presents. I did find time to mail 4 packages. I can't believe that I sold out my CD's on CD Baby! Wow!
I ended up picking Michelle up for lunch at the courthouse. We went home & enjoyed the 45 minutes around our own table. After dropping her off, I went to the studio for the final Gareth Asher session of his record. There were a few changes to be made. I'm really happy with it.
After he left at 5pm, Will Robertson showed up. He rented my room out to record a choir. I left him after I helped him get set up. Then it was home for dinner. We found out that MIchelle has to report back tomorrow morning to continue the case. We also attended our annual Home Owners' Association meeting tonight. That was a barrel of monkeys.
All in all it was a good day. Lots of things got done... including me - I'm done. Crispy fried. I'll sleep good tonight.

2009... let's finish this thing!

This year has been absolutely amazing. Since I last blogged we lost 3 CMA awards, we've been nominated for 3 Grammy Awards, & taped our CMT Crossroads with Jimmy Buffet. This month has been riddled by highlights. Thanksgiving was cool. I went to the mountains on vacation with the family short after it. ZBB has played a dozen shows this month too.
I'm looking forward to this time off. I came home yesterday. While I'm looking forward to my time at home, it will be full of errands & work. I only have to shop for Michelle's presents. She's shopped for everyone else. I have a list & am ready to start chipping away at it. I have plans to continue blogging. I'm actually going to force myself no matter how tired I may be at the end of the day.
